Step-by-step: building a schedule

1. Choose a shape code
Every bar starts with a shape code — the standard BS 8666:2020 number that defines how the bar is bent. Use the built-in shape picker to find the right one; if you're not sure which code matches your bar, our shape codes guide has a diagram for every standard shape.

2. Enter the dimensions
Once a shape is selected, the calculator shows its diagram with the leg dimensions labelled A, B, C and so on. Type in the lengths from your drawing, along with the bar size (e.g. 16mm) and steel grade.

3. Set the quantity
Enter the number of members that need this bar (e.g. how many identical beams) and the number of bars per member. The calculator multiplies these together to get the total number of bars for that mark.

4. Review the cutting length and weight
As soon as the dimensions are entered, the calculator applies the correct shape formula — including the bend deduction for the bar's radius and diameter — and shows the cutting length, total length and total weight instantly. No manual lookup of deduction tables required.

Repeat the process for every bar mark on the drawing. Each one becomes a row in the schedule, with a running total of steel weight across the whole job.

- Use consistent bar marks. Number bar marks sequentially by member type (e.g. 101 series for beams, 201 series for columns) so the schedule stays easy to scan as it grows.
- Double-check the steel grade. The bend radius and deduction depend on the grade as well as the bar size — getting this wrong under- or over-states the cutting length.
- Group by member. Enter bars member by member (all of Beam B1, then all of Beam B2) rather than jumping around — it's much easier to check against the drawing afterwards.
- Export early, export often. Export a PDF partway through a large schedule so you have a checkpoint to compare against if something needs correcting later.
