What Is Reinforcing Mesh Used For? (Sizes & Applications)
Reinforcing mesh — also called rebar mesh, steel mesh or concrete mesh — is a factory-welded grid of steel wires used to reinforce concrete without tying individual bars by hand on site. What reinforcing mesh is
Mesh is made from steel wires arranged in a square or rectangular grid and welded together at every intersection, then supplied as flat sheets or rolls of standard sizes. Because the grid is already fixed at the factory, laying mesh on site is largely a matter of positioning and lapping sheets correctly, rather than cutting, bending and tying dozens of individual bars.
How mesh is sized
Reinforcing mesh is specified by two things: the wire diameter and the spacing of the grid in each direction (centre to centre). A mesh might have, for example, 8mm wires spaced 200mm apart both ways — giving a consistent, predictable amount of steel per square metre. Standard sheet sizes exist for ease of handling and transport, and most suppliers offer a limited range of standard spacing/wire combinations rather than infinite custom options, which is the main practical limit on where mesh can be used instead of individually designed rebar.
Where reinforcing mesh is used
Ground slabs
Domestic and light commercial ground-bearing slabs, where mesh provides shrinkage and crack control across a large flat area.
Driveways & paths
Residential and light commercial paving, where mesh resists cracking from thermal movement and light traffic loading.
Pavements & hardstanding
Larger paved areas where a consistent grid of reinforcement is needed across the whole surface.
Secondary reinforcement
Even in structures that use individually placed rebar for main bars, mesh is often used for secondary/shrinkage reinforcement in slabs.
Where mesh isn't the right choice
Mesh is flat and can't be bent to a shape code, so it can't replace rebar wherever a bend, hook, or specific 3D shape is needed — beams, columns, and most cast-in-place structural members still rely on individually placed and bent bars, scheduled through a bar bending schedule. Heavily loaded or structurally critical slabs may also need a bar size, spacing, or layout that doesn't match a standard mesh sheet, in which case rebar (or a combination of rebar and mesh) is specified instead.
